Leg day starts at 6, you're already hungry at 4, and the last thing you want is a heavy meal sitting in your stomach through the squats. Is cream of rice easy to digest? Yes, for most people. It's low in fibre and low in fat, and that's why lifters eat it before training.
That lightness comes at a price, though. The low fibre that makes it sit so easily won't do much for your gut, and RISO contains a sweetener that doesn't suit every stomach.
Why cream of rice sits so lightly
Fibre and fat slow down how quickly food leaves your stomach, and cream of rice has very little of either. A 30 g serving of RISO Unflavoured has 0.8 g of fibre and 0.1 g of fat, alongside 24 g of carbohydrate. It's finely milled rice, so your body doesn't have much work to do to break it down.
Plain oats take longer, and for a good reason. A 30 g portion has around 3 g of fibre on typical values, and that fibre forms a gel that slows digestion. You'll want that at breakfast and you may not want it before heavy squats, as our cream of rice vs oats guide explains.
Cream of rice digestion time: why we won't give you a number
Search for how long cream of rice takes to digest and you'll find exact figures. Treat them with suspicion. Digestion time changes with your body, your portion and what you eat with it. A 30 g bowl made with water will usually leave your stomach sooner than 60 g with milk, protein powder and peanut butter, and even that comparison can shift from one person to the next.
Eating it before training
Many lifters have cream of rice an hour or two before training. Treat that as a starting point and test what suits you. Try 30 g made with water on an ordinary training day, notice how your stomach feels during your hardest sets, and adjust the timing or the portion from there. Save experiments for training days, never for a competition.
Keep the heavy extras for another meal. Nut butter and piles of fruit add fat and fibre, and they can turn a light bowl into a heavy one. If your session is short and easy, you may not need a meal before it at all. Water and your normal meals will do.
Does cream of rice make you poop?
Not much. With 0.8 g of fibre a serving, it won't get things moving the way oats do, which is part of why it feels comfortable before a heavy set. The risk comes if you build your diet around it, because you can end up short of fibre, and that can leave you constipated. Keep cream of rice as one part of your day and get your fibre from fruit, vegetables, beans and whole grains at other meals. Drink enough water too, especially in UAE heat.
The sweetener in RISO
RISO contains a sweetener, and that includes Unflavoured. Some people's stomachs react to sweeteners, with bloating or a bathroom trip they didn't plan. If a bowl upsets you, the rice may not be the cause. Check the ingredients panel on your tub, and start with a small portion if you don't know how you'll react. If you already know sweeteners disagree with you, we'd skip RISO.
If you manage your blood sugar, take care
Fast digestion has a downside. Refined rice carbohydrate raises blood sugar quickly, and the under 0.1 g of sugars on the label doesn't change that, because the 24 g of carbohydrate in a serving is mostly starch that your body breaks down fast. If you're managing your blood sugar, be careful with cream of rice and ask your doctor before adding it to your routine.
Try it on a normal training day
A 1020 g tub gives you 34 servings of 30 g for AED 129 at the time of writing (November 2026), about AED 3.79 a serving. That's plenty of bowls to find your timing. RISO Unflavoured is the plainest place to start. If you'd rather have flavour, try RISO Caramel Macchiato, and remember that nutrition can vary between flavours.

Frequently asked questions
Is cream of rice fast digesting?
Yes, in practice. Rice is mostly starch, which is a complex carbohydrate, but it's refined and low in fibre, so your body breaks it down quickly.
How long for cream of rice to digest?
There's no fixed time. It depends on you, your portion and what's in the bowl. Many lifters leave an hour or two before training, so start there and adjust.
Is cream of rice good before a workout?
Yes, if you want carbohydrate that sits lightly. A 30 g serving gives you 24 g of carbohydrate. If you need more, raise the portion in small steps and see how your stomach copes.
Can you drink cream of rice?
The directions on the RISO label are for a smooth rice cream you eat, and they don't include a drink or shake. For one 30 g scoop, mix with 100 to 150 ml of boiling water, stir well and leave for 1 to 2 minutes. Or mix with 100 to 150 ml of cold water or milk, stir, heat in the microwave and stir again. Using 150 ml gives you a looser result than 100 ml. Anything beyond that is your own experiment, so we'd stick to the label.
RISO is a carbohydrate supplement, not a medicine. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, on medication or have a medical condition, ask your doctor before adding it to your diet.
